About the Blog

The tagline of this website refers to a famous statement by Justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856–1941). His statement that “sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants” appeared in a 1913 Harper’s Weekly article, entitled “What Publicity Can Do”. Brandeis saw publicity, transparency and critical analysis as a remedy for all kinds of ‘social diseases’. Twenty years earlier, in a personal letter, Brandeis had already expressed the idea that “If the broad light of day could be let in upon men’s actions, it would purify them as the sun disinfects.” In making this statement Brandeis was probably inspired by James Bryce who in 1888 remarked that injustice, cruelty, etc. “shun the light” and “to expose them is to defeat them”.
